Entertain friends this New Year

New Year’s Eve is fast approaching and people up and down the country have yet to finalise plans. Money is tight after Christmas and fighting the crowds in town isn’t an attractive proposition. The easiest and most enjoyable solution is to invite friends around and throw a bit of a party.

There is no better way to bring in the New Year than with your closest friends. You can sit around sharing memories from the year gone by and talk about hopes for 2012. Alternatively, just get a bucket load of booze in and get very drunk!

The best parties are usually ones which involve fancy dress. Ridiculous costumes get the laughs going early doors and that sets the tone for a great night.

It is more than likely that your friends will bring plenty of drink with them, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Make sure you don’t get caught short – you won’t find many shops open late on New Year’s Eve!

A crate or two of premium beer, a selection of wine and spirits – that should do the trick. You can never have too much alcohol. If anything, you will have some booze leftover, which is never a bad thing.

If you are debating which beer to go for, you can’t go wrong with Foster’s Gold, a relatively new lager on the market. It is cheaper than the alternatives and goes down easier, maybe a bit too easy. Its clean, crisp taste has made it a hit with both sexes. It is well worth a try.

So, if you find yourself stuck for ideas, raid the supermarket and fancy dress store and have some friends around. You are guaranteed to give 2011 a good send off and bring in 2012 with those closest to you.

A drink for all occasions

It used to be a simple process – walk into a bar, order your usual and find yourself a seat. These days, there is so much choice that you find yourself staring at a drinks menu as you would a food menu in a restaurant.

World beer, real ale, fruit beer, premium lager – there is so much choice for beer drinkers in pubs, clubs and bars up and down the country. The downside to such an array of options is the effect it has on your bank balance and other social commitments!

There are obviously those who would rather have fewer options and find menus cluttered nowadays. Quite frankly, those people don’t know what they are missing out on.

For many people, beer is increasingly becoming the drink of choice. There was a time when you could spot a beer drinker a mile off. Not anymore. Beer drinkers come in all shapes and sizes. Women are now attracted by light and refreshing fruity beers and will often be spotted in the corner of a pub enjoying a half pint of beer or lager.

If you don’t like the idea of standing in a bar with a glass of beer in your hand, a bottle is a stylish alternative. Most recognisable lager brands come in bottle form. Fosters Gold is a good example of a refreshing lager, packaged in a way which appeals to both men and women. The clean, crisp taste – coupled with the cool image built through the “Good Call” ads – has made the lager increasingly popular with men in their early 20s.

Beer is no longer just a means to an end for young drinkers or a way to wind down an afternoon in a working men’s club, it is so much more. Its versatility makes it a drink for all occasions.

Quality beer ‘becoming increasingly popular’

Since I started in the wine and spirits industry, I have noticed a gradual and welcome increase in the number of quality beers and lagers that are available.

It used to be that being a beer fan meant you were either a young man downing pints of fizzy lager in bars or an old fuddy duddy real ale fanatic drinking stouts and bitters in the local pub.

Nowadays, however, the image of beer has changed beyond recognition and there is so much choice and variety available that anyone can find a beer that they love and that can be enjoyed in pretty much any situation.

For a start, there is a wider variety than ever of bottled premium lagers, such as Foster’s Gold. This type of beer is packaged in a way that is appealing to the under-40s and which makes beer more accessible for enjoying in, say, a nightclub or at a festival, where a full pint of beer is not necessarily practical. Couple this with their cool, crisp and refreshing taste, and it’s no wonder bottled premium beers have proven such a sure-fire hit for the drinks industry.

And it’s not just bottled lager that has helped to bring beer ‘to the masses’, so to speak. Fruit beer is increasingly popular in bars and pubs, with cherry and raspberry varieties fast becoming the drink of choice for adventurous drinkers.

The great thing about all this new choice and variety is that it is opening up a whole world of new taste experiences to so many people. It used to be the case that drinking beer at home meant opening a can in front of the TV, but with the quality on offer these days, a variety of beer is increasingly enjoyed as an accompaniment to a meal, while relaxing in the garden and a whole range of other occasions.
