Alternative Valentines

So what did you do for St. Valentines Day this year? Are you in the go-out-for-a-fancy-dinner camp or the stay-in-and-ignore-it brigade? Or simply single and more than happy to sit this one out and think about possibilities for next year!

As well as the obligatory gorgeous dozen red roses Valentines Day is definitely very much linked to food and drink. After flowers two of the other top choices for gifts are luxury chocolates and champagne, with perfume and jewellery thrown in the mix for good measure too. It is definitely a day to celebrate the senses. Newsflash for the boys however – we don’t always want a frivolous display of wealth and affection, sometimes a more everyday and practical gift is just the thing. How about a gift basket with all her favourite Pantene hair care products or tickets to see the boy band which is her guilty pleasure?!

For Mums everywhere the gift of time is certainly one of the most especially prized. Husbands can’t go far wrong with babysitting tokens or vouchers for Beauty Therapy. A little ‘me’ time is always welcome to escape from the rollercoaster of everyday family life for a few hours. So maybe next Valentines we should all put a bit more thought into our present ideas and try for something a little bit more unique and bespoke.

Cooking a meal for a loved one is a wonderful way to express your feelings through the time and effort involved – and hopefully the delicious results too! Make their favourite dish and dress up for the occasion to make it even more special. Other ideas include having a go at baking a cake – boys you could give this one a try! – or how about the ultimate romantic surprise engagement to really seal the deal. Go for it!

History of barbecues

Ah, the humble barbecue. Who would have thought that such a simple invention could bring so much pleasure to so many. Offering an excuse for friends, family and loved ones to gather together in the summer months and enjoy food, drink and plenty of merriment al fresco.

Most of us are familiar with barbecues of course, but how many of us know much, if anything at all, about its origins? Probably not many of us, but it is worth finding out as the history of the humble barbecue is pretty interesting.

The word ‘barbecue’ stems from ‘barbicu’, a Caribbean word which literally means ‘sacred fire pit’ and which later became ‘barbacoa’ in European languages. The word described a grill used to cook meat, usually a wooden platform on sticks.

Going back to before the American Civil War, the pig was an extremely popular as a food source and pig slaughtering was a cause for celebration, in which the community would gather together to slaughter the pig and enjoy the fruits of their labour by cooking and eating it. This was an early version of the modern day barbecue!

Historically, another popular meat to barbecue was goat; often a whole one which would be cooked and the juices captured to make a broth… a little bit different to the cheese burgers and grilled prawns of today. And the word barbecue was in the 18th century defined as ‘a whole dressed hog’.

So if you were a vegetarian in those days, barbecues weren’t for you!

Nowadays, charcoal, gas and electric barbecues are used to cook a variety of meats and non-meats, often accompanied by salads and plenty of beers, wine or other refreshing beverages. So get involved in a great tradition and make sure you’ve got your Weber barbecue ready for summer this year!

What is Continental Breakfast

continental breakfast

continental breakfast

If you stayed in a hotel or motel recently, you were likely able to enjoy a continental breakfast.

Many lodging facilities now offer that kind of service as a part of their amenity package.

Actually it’s gotten to the point at which a continental breakfast is expected, and it’s the rare location that does not offer this perk. What’s a continental breakfast and why is it being offered? A continental breakfast is straightforward, not fancy. Do not expect a complicated smorgasboard. Dependent on the hotel or motel you may receive coffee, tea, various juices, rolls, bagels, pastries and maybe individual sized cereal boxes. It’s so named because it’s the breakfast of choice on The Continent, or Europe. While the menu does not include mimosas and Eggs Benedict, most agree that a continental breakfast is convenient and appreciated. Originally this straightforward morning meal was only offered by one or two prime chains, but now it is more normal. In reality many busy folk will not even stay at a selected hotel unless a continental breakfast is a component of the amenity package. Because it’s included in the price of the hotel stay, it makes the concept of running to the lobby for a scone and cup of joe that much more appealing.
